Reconstruction and subsequent use of the former Albert Schweizer Secondary School as a barrier-free residential complex in Chemnitz.
In 1981 and 1982, the former school building has been installed as a dual track polytechnic secondary school. The building is a standardized design (2 Mp wall constructions according to catalogue IG 65 serial Karl-Marx-Stadt) of the former GDR. A total of 29 apartments additionally one small flat arranged in the doctor’s office situated in the south gable of the ground floor. The apartments have two or three rooms and are generally barrier-free accessible.
The technical building installation measures include the planning of a heating system and a ventilation facility as well as sanitary installations considering the fire protection regulations, noise insulation requirements and use-specific guidelines. The elevator system was designed as a lift opening to both sides which allows the transport of a stretcher. The hot water supply for every apartment is decentralized and can be adjusted via a plate heat exchanger with district heat connection to up to 60°C. The existing district heating connection could be used and a new district heating station with about 100 kW was installed. The sanitary facilities of the residential units primarily are based on the requirements of the housing construction. High value was placed on the accessibility. Individual exhaust air systems were installed in the bathrooms and kitchens. The entire electrical installations as well as the control technology of the building were newly installed.
